April was all about fasting from unnecessary or inappropriate language—everything from flat-out cussing to unnecessary fillers like "Oh my God" or "What the heck."
Words are everything. And just as I remind my students, you can use your words to build people up or tear people down. You can use them to stand up for what you believe in or to remain silent and ineffective.

Over the past two weeks, I have had the opportunity to be a part of the #RedForEd movement in Arizona. For years, the public educational system in Arizona has greatly declined. Class sizes have spiked. Teacher pay has become stagnant. Classroom funding has decreased. Students and educators are NOT getting the support and tools they need to build up the next generation working professionals.
On Thursday, April 26th, Arizona Educators United—the leaders of AZ educators—decided to use their words and their actions to stand up for what we believe in: the future of our students. Nearly 75,000 people in support of educators and public education gathered at the Arizona Capitol in strike, which has continued through today.

As a part of the rally since day one, I am encouraged and excited to be a part of what is considered a historic movement in Arizona. I have listened to speakers (both teachers and students) talk with such heart and passion about what they believe in and what change they hope to see for the future of public education. Even after only residing in Arizona and working in education for three years, I feel an overwhelming desire to use my words and my actions for the good of the educational workplace.
Reflecting on the strike and on the power of words, I hope to continue thinking carefully before blurting out the first thing that comes to mind or using a filler or cussing "just for the fun of it." I hope to continue watching my words and using them to produce goodness, positivity, and empowerment in this world.
